Project Literacy offers one-on-one tutoring for adults 18+ years old. Our tutors are trained volunteers who spend at least an hour a week with each client.
We offer both one-on-one confidential instruction in reading for all ages. Some of our clients already know how to read and wish to be better but some do not read at all. We utilize the basic curriculum developed by Frank Laubach called, Laubach Way to Reading, but it is only a framework. Our tutors are encouraged to meet clients at their needs and to provide engaging, creative sessions based on the interest and ability.
Project Literacy offers both one-on-one instruction in speaking, writing, and reading the English language and a small group class for those whose native language is Spanish. We have worked with a variety of speakers of native languages from Arabic to Korean and use Google Translate to effectively communicate with learners.
Writing is a component of our reading instruction and clients are encouraged to write responses to reading and experiences. But, writing can also be the main focus of a client’s learning experience. From basic written communication to college essays, Project Literacy will tailor our instruction to your needs.
Many clients contact Project Literacy looking to review their math skills before taking the GED, but some people want a review of the basics too. We provide instruction in all areas of mathematics from counting money to algebra and beyond. We use the Breakthrough to Math series as a tool to meet the client at their comfort level.
Whether you’ve just purchased your first tablet or computer or you need a refresher course in the basics of using cell phones or other electronic devices, Project Literacy can help. We offer one-on-one, confidential tutoring in everything from how to use a computer to specific programs such as Excel.
