Project Literacy owes its existence to a group of dedicated women who formed the Danville Reading Center in the mid-1960’s. Among these women was Nancy Jiranek, who served as the Center’s Executive Director until 1986 when she became the sole organizer and the facilitator for Project Literacy.
For nearly 40 years, Project Literacy has helped hundreds of Danville area adults learn to read and improve their literacy skills.
Project Literacy is honored to be the 2024 recipient of the B. R. Ashby, M.D. Award for Outstanding Community Service sponsored by the Danville Regional Foundation.
Did you know Project Literacy has only one employee? Our director is the only paid position. The rest of the staff is made up of caring and committed volunteers. Give us a call or text at 434-483-7994 if you would like to volunteer or if you or someone you know needs our help.
Besides all of our amazing volunteers, Project Literacy is led by a dedicated team including our Executive Director and all members serving on our Board of Directors. If you are interested in serving on our Board or volunteering, reach out to our email at projectliteracydanville@gmail.com.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
By giving just an hour or two of your time each week as a volunteer tutor, you can help improve literacy in our community. Learn more about how to become a volunteer at Danville Project Literacy today!
You can also support Danville Project Literacy’s work in the community by donating so we can continue to provide these services to our neighbors. Donating to Project Literacy is a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday, honor someone, or remember a life well-lived.
