Project Literacy offers a variety of programs in addition to confidential one-on-one tutoring.
Our English for Spanish Speakers class meets weekly at 5:30 at our office and is a chance for native Spanish speakers to learn to read and write English. All skill levels are welcome. Each week’s lesson is centered around a central theme such as food, greetings, or clothing and an activity is provided to practice these words and learn English phrases. To join the class, text 434-483-7994.
What in the world is a JeopardBee?
Jeopardy + Bee = JeopardBee!
Think game show and childhood torture (for some of us!).
JeopardBee is an adult spelling bee in the format of the popular television game show, Jeopardy. When you add adult beverages and awards like “Most Creative Spellers” and “Most Enthusiastic Team” to the mix, you get an exciting, competitive, hilarious evening!
JeopardBee is also the major fundraiser for Project Literacy each year. On this single evening, we try to raise enough money to sustain our free tutoring program for adults for another year. Your support is not only appreciated, but quite needed.
We will have a book sale, a silent auction, a free gift card drawing for The Dog-Eared Page Bookstore and Me’s Burgers & Brews, a 50/50 raffle, and a gift card raffle with two chances to win one of two pots with $200 worth of gift cards in each!
The Cauldron, Two Witches own food truck, will be open and so will the delicious samplings from the brewery itself!
Plus, our mascot played by the hilarious Barry Mayo will be buzzing around creating enthusiasm all evening!
This weekly book club is designed for people who read but would like help understanding what they read. Each participant is provided a copy of the current novel, a notebook, and supplies. Each week the facilitator offers a chance for people to discuss what we’re reading and a short activity designed to improve comprehension skills. Book Buds meets at the Southside Community Learning Center each Tuesday at 11:00 am. Please contact us to become part of this dynamic group.
These small group workshops give area citizens a chance to learn something new. We have offered classes in American Sign Language, creative poetry and papier mache, basket weaving from recycled materials, watercolor painting, and junk journaling. The classes are engaging and fun; they feature a literacy component as well. The workshops are free of charge but registration is required. Follow our Facebook page for announcements or join our mailing list.
Project Literacy offers a book club called Book Buds that is based on two meanings of “buds”. The first meaning, is growth, especially in understanding what is read, while the second meaning is “friendship”. Through a shared book, we hope to help our community in both education and social participation!
Next month, we’re trying something new! We’re going to do our first virtual Book Buds for those 18 years old or older.
We hope you’ll consider joining us for this entertaining and exciting book club! Participation is limited to 15 people, so don’t delay in signing up!
Here’s how it works:
Given the season, the first book we’ll read is a memoir called Toil and Trouble by Augusten Burroughs. Here’s the description:
For as long as Augusten Burroughs could remember, he knew things he shouldn’t have known. He manifested things that shouldn’t have come to pass. And he told exactly no one about this, save one person: his mother. His mother reassured him that it was all perfectly normal, that he was descended from a long line of witches, going back to the days of the early American colonies. And that this family tree was filled with witches. It was a bond that he and his mother shared–until the day she left him in the care of her psychiatrist to be raised in his family (but that’s a whole other story). After that, Augusten was on his own. On his own to navigate the world of this tricky power; on his own to either use or misuse this gift.
From the hilarious to the terrifying, Toil & Trouble is a chronicle of one man’s journey to understand himself, to reconcile the powers he can wield with things with which he is helpless. There are very few things that are coincidences, as you will learn in Toil & Trouble. Ghosts are real, trees can want to kill you, beavers are the spawn of Satan, houses are alive, and in the end, love is the most powerful magic of all.
You may be familiar with Augusten Burroughs from his other books, namely Running with Scissors or the film version of it. He’s a fantastic and though provoking author.
Here’s the breakdown of our Book Buds schedule:
We will meet each Tuesday evening in October from 6:00-7:00 pm (the 7th, the 14th, the 21st, and the 28th). An invitation to the meeting will be sent on the morning of club meetings.
Enjoy a meal and time spent interacting with the deaf community! We ask that you use ASL, notes, phone apps, etc. to communicate or buy a $5.00 pass to use your voice. Proceeds go to Project Literacy. All are welcome, but you do need to register. Email us at projectliteracydanville@gmail.com.
