Project Literacy is a non-profit, community based organization dedicated to improving literacy rates among adults in Danville, Virginia. We firmly believe that literacy is the foundation of education, opportunity, and social and civic participation.
Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in a way that lets us makes sense of the world.¹
Did you know that nearly 20% of your fellow people in Danville and the surrounding area struggle to read and write? That’s nearly one in every five citizens of the city. You may believe that you don’t know anyone who struggles with literacy; and yet, with nearly one in five people affected, you probably do. People who struggle to read and write often hide the fact even from their closest loved ones.
Project Literacy offers one-on-one tutoring for adults 18+ years old.
Our tutors are trained volunteers who spend at least an hour a week with each client.
Our English for Spanish Speakers class meets weekly at 5:30 at our office. Learn how to join the class!
JeopardBee is an adult spelling bee in the format of the popular television game show, Jeopardy.
This weekly book club is designed for people who read but would like help understanding what they read.
These small group workshops give area citizens a chance to learn something new, including ASL and papier mache!
We’re going to do our first virtual Book Buds every Tuesday for those 18 years old or older on the book Toil & Trouble.
Enjoy a meal and time spent interacting with the deaf community at Kickback Jack’s! All are welcome, but you do need to register.
